A traditional metal choke chain / check chain designed for dog training and controlled lead work. The simple slip-chain design allows the chain to tighten under lead tension and release again when the tension is removed.

Correct Use & Fitting

Despite commonly being called a “choke chain”, this training aid is not intended to choke the dog. When correctly fitted and used, the action should be a brief, controlled movement followed by an immediate release of tension. The sound and movement of the chain form part of the training cue, helping to gain the dog’s attention without maintaining pressure around the neck.

Getting the correct size and fit is important. An easy way to measure is to place a piece of string comfortably around the dog’s neck, then measure the string against a ruler or tape measure and add approximately 6 inches (15cm). This allows sufficient room for the chain to be fitted and used correctly.

The chain must also be fitted in the correct direction so that it releases immediately when the lead pressure is relaxed. As with any training aid, incorrect fitting, excessive force or continuous tension can cause discomfort or injury. Used correctly, the chain is intended as a communication and training tool, not a restraint for choking the dog, and should never be left on an unattended dog.
